Pregnancy has a profound effect on the psychology of a woman expecting her bundle of joy. Taking the same into consideration, psychologists and the obstetricians, always recommend a normal vaginal delivery. However, in certain circumstances in pregnancy we need to opt for caesarian delivery for the safe outcome of the mother and baby. We can list the reasons for caesarian delivery as either for the maternal indication or for the foetal (baby) indication.

Maternal Indications:

  • Contracted pelvis or cephalopelvic disproportion: It is a situation in which the the capacity of the pelvis is inadequate to allow the fetus to negotiate the birth canal. This may be due to a small pelvis, a nongynecoid pelvic formation, a large fetus, an unfavorable orientation of the fetus, or a combination of these factors.
  • Fibroids: Tumors in the lower part of the uterus obstructing the passage for vaginal delivery).
  • Medical conditions like:
    • Rheumatic Heart Disorder Pregnancy can stress the heart and have an impact on the health of the mother.
    • Severe hypertension including Preeclampsia and eclampsia- it is associated with high blood pressure and protein in the urine. This situation usually develops in the third trimester and the same complicates with time. Preeclampsia increases the risk of poor outcomes for both the mother and the baby.
    • Previous two or more caesarian section.
    • Previous Myomectomy- It is a surgical procedure to remove uterine fibroids. These are common noncancerous growths that appear in the uterus, usually during childbearing years, but they can occur at any age.
    • Elderly Primigravida and precious pregnancy- woman who is pregnant for the first time and who has conceived post IVF procedures.

Foetal Indications:

  • Acute foetal distress: The distress may be caused by a number of factors such as maternal illness, placental abruption, umbilical cord compression, fetal infection or simply because the mother is in a position that puts pressure on major blood vessels, depriving the baby of oxygen.

It could be due to:

  • Tight loops of cord round foetal neck
  • Malpositioning of the baby in the womb
  • Placenta conditions like placenta praevia and abruption placenta – bleeding during pregnancy.
  • Twin pregnancy with malpresentations

If there are any complications that are detected by a Fetal Medicine Expert or a Gynecologist, please be open for a C-Section. The choice would be for your own safety and for better health results for yourself and your baby.

Also if you feel that there is any complication or abnormality then you should consult your doctor immediately.
