Most breast lumps are caused by benign (non-cancerous) conditions but sometimes a breast lump can be a symptom of breast cancer. Thus it is very important to consult and get examined by your doctor once you notice the lump in your breast. These lumps can occur at any age. Hormonal changes can cause these lumps and at times they disappear naturally also. There are many causes of these lumps-

1. Fibroadenomas -They are painless, well-rounded, rubbery, smooth, solid benign (noncancerous)harmless lumps of glandular and fibrous tissue.  It is also known as ‘a breast mouse’ because the lumps can move around when pressed. They are usually more common in young girls. They may disappear on their own, but can often persist and grow. Often, fibroadenomas don’t need treatment. However, if it’s large or growing rapidly or causes discomfort or worry, it may be removed
2. Benign Fibrocystic Disease—It is a benign condition. Women may have very different symptoms, and the same woman may experience varying symptoms on different occasions. It can cause increase in breast size, breast pain and lump in the breast
3. Mastitis or Infection– This is caused by an infection during breastfeeding, but it can occur at other times due to blockage and inflammation of the breast duct with an infection. Treatment includes antibiotics and a small drainage if the abscess is formed.
4. Breast Cysts or Abscess- Cysts are fluid-filled sacs that are almost always benign. They can be single or multiple, tiny or large, painful at times and can occur in one or both the breasts. Unless the cyst is large and causing discomfort, in which case it may be drained, it does not normally require treatment. Sometimes cysts continue to recur and surgical removal may be necessary. A breast abscess is a painful condition in which pus forms inside the breast, along with this there can be fever and swelling over the affected area.
5. Lipoma– Lipomas (fatty growth) of a breast are benign and are more common in adult aged between 40 and 60.
6. Breast Cancer- A lump is more likely to be a sign of breast cancer if it is firm and does not move around. Along with, there may be puckering or dimpling in the skin of the affected breast, nipple discharge or inversion of the nipple.

Most of the breast lumps are benign and noncancerous but they can also be a sign of cancer, so it is important to get them examined by your doctor as soon as you spot them.
