Paras Bliss, Panchkula Organizes ‘Bliss-A-Thon’ to Promote Healthy Lifestyle

As we celebrate Diwali to mark the victory of good over evil, residents of Panchkula today joined a crucial initiative by Paras Bliss Hospital to achieve victory over obesity and lifestyle diseases — the major health ‘evils’ of our times.

Enthusiastic men and women from all walks of life turned up in encouraging numbers to run in the mini marathon organized by Paras Bliss Hospital, Panchkula with an aim to promote healthy and active living as means to prevent lifestyle ailments such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and hypertension, among others. It is important to underline that daily physical exercise like running and walking is absolutely essential to fight the lifestyle disease epidemic facing India.

The ‘Bliss-A-Thon’ saw active participation of a wide spectrum of people from school children, working professionals to the city’s elderly residents who ran across a 3.1 km stretch starting from Yavanika Open Air Theatre, Town Park sec 5, Panchkula and ending at Paras Bliss Hospital, Panchkula.

“With near total mechanization of all sorts of jobs, our urban lifestyles today are fashioned to minimize physical activity. Elevators have replaced stairs; bicycles have made way for cars. Increasing prevalence of home deliveries mean that we do not even walk down to our neighborhood stored for our daily groceries. Even household chores such as laundry and cleaning today require very less physical activity as compared to just 10 years back. All these factors have drastically reduced our levels of physical activity and the result is for all to see. We are facing an epidemic of lifestyle diseases that can be prevented if all people adopt physically active lifestyles. The marathon is aimed at encouraging people to step out of their houses and take to running,” says Dr. Rishi Mangat, Unit Head, Paras Bliss Hospital, Panchkula.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of deaths across the world, including India. While, the risk of acquiring CVD increases with age, unhealthy lifestyle factors such as  poor diet and lack of physical activity today are making relatively younger people prone to the disease. Similarly, the increasing incidence of obesity, diabetes and hypertension is also driven by sedentary lifestyles.

Aimed at encouraging and motivating people to make health a focus, the special initiative by the hospital aims to awaken people about the importance of healthy lifestyle in ensuring a long and productive life.

“While medical advancements have increased life expectancy of the world’s population, unfortunately our lifestyle shifts have curtailed this achievement by augmenting our risks for several diseases. Factors such as sedentary jobs, near total mechanization of work, heavy dependence on technology, unhealthy food habits, and highly stressful lives that include irregular sleeping patterns form the prime reasons for the surge in prevalence of lifestyle diseases today. We need to counter these negative factors by adopting positive modes of action such as regular physical exercise, running, jogging and walking every day. 30 minutes of exercise daily goes a long way in reducing our risk for several diseases including obesity, diabetes, hypertension and heart disease,” says Dr. Rishi Mangat, Unit Head, Paras Bliss Hospital, Panchkula.

Through the marathon, the hospital  not only wants to draw youngsters to the idea of exercise but also exhort the administration for creating exercise friendly environment in the city including clean and safe spaces to walk, run or cycle.

The benefits that running brings to health are known to everybody. Running helps burn calories and keeps Body Mass Index under check; it cuts the risk of diabetes and heart disease. In fact physical activity is also believed to lower the risk of several types of cancers.
