What Type of Clothes Should I Make My Baby Wear?

Babies need clothes that are comfortable and easy to get on and off. People in the family, friends and many others that we know, recommend lots of options for dressing babies, but perhaps the most important advice is to know your own child and be alert for signs that he/she is feeling uncomfortable.

What to keep in mind while buying clothes for your baby ?

While buying clothes for your baby remember to always look for garments that snap or zip all the way down the front, instead of the back; have loose-fitting sleeves and do not fit around your baby’s neck too tightly and those that have cords or ties. Be careful with buttons, ribbons, and decorative items. Make sure they’re on securely as they can be a choking hazard for the baby. Try to avoid any sort of such fancy decoration on baby’s dresses.

Winter dressing recommendations for babies:

In winters your baby would need several layers of clothing to stay warm. You may dress your baby simply in an undershirt and diapers, under pajamas or a dressing gown, and then wrap in a receiving blanket. You may consider a wearable blanket sleeper or sleep sack as a safe alternative for an extra layer. But remember not to overdo and follow a simple guideline to dress your newborn in the same number of layers you’re wearing yourself, plus one. Pay attention to this fact especially when you’re indoors. Babies dressed in too many layers are at greater risk for overheating and suffer SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome).

Summer dressing recommendations for babies:

In summers reduce your baby’s clothing to a single layer only. Babies feel comfortable in loose, lightweight clothes made of cotton. Cotton is the best option for summer fabrics as it is natural and breathable. Prefer light shades of colors instead of dark; they are cooler. Choose colors like white, light shades of pink, blue and green. Babies cannot regulate their own body temperature, thus it is important to protect them from overheating on hot and humid days. Extra layers of clothing can generate heat on the baby’s body and cause prickly heat rashes. In extreme cases, overheating can also cause heatstroke.

Dressing recommendations for Premature babies:

Premature babies may need still another layer of clothing until their weight reaches that of a full-term baby. It is because they are more susceptible to fluctuations in temperature changes and are not able to adjust to same in a better way than full term babies.
