Q)Can all mothers provide Kangaroo Mother Care?
All mothers can provide Kangaroo Mother Care, irrespective of age, parity, religion, education, culture.
She should be willing for Kangaroo Mother Care, free from serious illness, maintaining good hygiene, daily bathing/ sponging ,daily changing clothes and proper hand washing, and maintaining short and clean finger nails.
Q)Who else can provide Kangaroo Mother Care?
Any other family member like father, grandparents or any other member can also be involved in providing Kangaroo Mother Care.
Q)What is the method of Kangaroo Mother Care?
Mother should be seated in a reclining chair, she should be wearing front-open clothing; baby should be dressed in cap, socks, nappy and front-open dress.
Baby is placed on the mother’s bare chest between her breasts in an upright position. Turn head to one side and chin slightly up allowing eye to eye contact between mother and baby.
Support baby’s bottom with mother’s hand or sling.Wrap the baby with mother’s gown to prevent hypothermia.
Q)What should be the duration of Kangaroo Mother Care?
Initial session to be at least one hour, gradually increasing the duration upto 24 hours per day, interrupted only for changing the nappy.
Q)How will the baby be fed during Kangaroo Mother Care?
Mother may breast feed the baby in KMC position. If baby is on expressed breast milk, she can be fed with spoon in KMC position.
Q)Can Kangaroo Mother Care be provided at home?
Post discharge, KMC may be continued at home.
Q)When to discontinue Kangaroo Mother Care?
KMC may be discontinued when the baby’s gestation reaches term or weight is around 2.5kg; she starts wriggling to show that she is uncomfortable, pulls her limbs out, or cries and fusses each time mother tries KMC!
