As some foods can increase one’s fertility there are also some that  when consumed in large quantities, may delay or in some cases even prevent you from conceiving. Here’s the list of some of these foods:

  • Peas – There has been research and scientists have proven that this vegetable works as a natural contraceptive, a natural chemical found in peas called m-xylohydroquinone- did appear to have contraceptive effects. In studies conducted in India, capsules containing the above-mentioned chemical were found to cut the pregnancy rate by up to 60 percent. In men who took the pea capsule, sperm counts dropped by some 50 percent.
  • Soybeans– They also disrupt your ability to get pregnant. It has to do with their high content phytoestrogens, the egg production and ovulation is affected with excess intake of estrogen which leads to a hormone imbalance.
  • Artificial sweeteners– Particularly avoid saccharin, which according to studies may not be fit to consume before or after conception. Besides aspartame too should be avoided

  • Soda, high-sugar fruit drinks and candy – Excessive sugar can lead to hypoglycemia, which in turn can upset levels of reproductive hormones.
  • Raw milk, meat and poultry – A virus that can reside in uncooked meat and can also harm the conception
  • High saturated fats – Fats like palm oil or vanaspati or processed meats have been linked to an estrogen overload.
  • Food additives – A common food additive which is used in Asian cuisines as well as in some potato chips and other snack foods is monosodium glutamate commonly known as MSG has a potential to effect fertility in both men and women.
  • Caffeine– Excess coffee or carbonated mainly black drinks increases the risk of not conceiving. The percentage increases to 176 percent within a year of consuming more than three cups of per day.
  • Vegan Diet – most of the vegetarian diet low in protein and lack of zinc, vitamin B12, iron and folic acid which can lower conception odds. To make your vegetarian diet work for and not against your fertility take nutritional supplements and keep your intake of protein optimum. Add legumes, nuts, whole grains and dairy foods.
  • Ideal body weight – lastly, most important is to try and keep your weight under control as it helps in early conception without many complications.

If you are planning to conceive, it is important that you visit a gynecologist and at the same time consult a nutrition expert, who can recommend a well detailed pro pregnancy diet plan for you. A nutrition expert will be able to balance your weight and your hormonal imbalances to support conceiving.
