Every parent has to deal with a cranky child. Some might encounter this sparsely while for some it may be quite frequent. Everyone gets into a bad mood from time to time and sometimes there’s nothing we can do but wait it out. Tantrums are a normal stage of toddler development. It is more common in children who are very sensitive and may occur due to the frustration of being unable to express a feeling or perform something beyond their skills and abilities for the age. Some tips for you to control your toddlers who throw excessive tantrums are:
Control Yourself: In these kinds of situations, you cannot control what your child does, but, you can control yourself. Take a deep breath and back off. Respond only after you get the proper mindset, body language and tone of voice to defuse the situation.
Warm Bath: You may try putting your little cranky in a warm water bath. The warmness soothes them and the unexpected bath time distracts them which then usually change their cranky behavior.
Check the Schedule: Any unexpected interference in your routine may lead to your child’s crankiness, as it would break their routine too. Younger kids who don’t have the ability to express their feelings well are more susceptible to becoming cranky when they fail to express themselves. The best thing you could do is hopefully avoid such distractions in the usual routine and thus cranky patterns in the future.
Lighten the Mood: Instead of dwelling on the cranky behavior, turn on fun music and start dancing around the room, singing aloud. This will often deflect the bad mood and help the child who is having a hard time loosen up.
Find out the Cause: Boredom, frustration for not being able to do something, hunger and too many people around may be some of the triggers. Watch out for these and offer your help and guidance before being asked. Judge the pre-tantrum symptoms such as facial expressions and body language. As the child grows and learns to express and use language, the tantrums would diminish.
